A small apartment in Helsinki
Asunnonhaku Helsingissä on yllättävän vaikeaa. Asuntojen hinnat ovat korkeita, ja hyviä asuntoja menee nopeasti. Etsin asuntoa kuusi kuukautta ennen kuin löysin tämän.
Olin nähnyt yli kaksikymmentä asuntoa. Joka kerta menin näyttöön ja kävelin ympäri huoneita. Asunnot olivat usein liian pieniä, liian kalliita tai liian kaukana keskustasta. Joskus omistaja valitsi jonkun muun vuokralaisen.
Lopulta löysin asunnon, joka miellytti minua. Se on kerrostalossa, jossa on neljä kerrosta. Asuntomme on toisessa kerroksessa. Talo on rakennettu 1960-luvulla, mutta se on remontoitu hyvin.
Asunnossa on kaksi huonetta, keittiö ja kylpyhuone. Kokonaispinta-ala on viisikymmentäviisi neliömetriä. Pieni mutta riittävä kahdelle hengelle. Vuokraa maksamme tuhat kaksisataa euroa kuussa, mikä on Helsingissä keskihinta.
Olohuoneessa on iso ikkuna. Ikkunasta näkyy katu ja sen takana puita. Aamulla aurinko paistaa olohuoneeseen. Tämä on minun lempipaikkani. Istun usein sohvalla, juon kahvia ja luen kirjaa.
Keittiö on pieni, mutta toimiva. Siinä on jääkaappi, liesi, mikroaaltouuni ja astianpesukone. Vaimoni rakastaa astianpesukonetta. Sanoo, että se on paras keksintö. Aikaisemmin tiskasimme käsin, mikä vei paljon aikaa.
Makuuhuone on rauhallinen. Ikkuna avautuu pihalle. Pihalla ei ole liikennettä, joten nukkua voi hiljaa. Olen tyytyväinen unenlaatuun. Aikaisemmassa asunnossa kuulin auton äänen koko yön.
Kylpyhuoneessa on suihku, vessa ja pyykkikone. Saunaa meillä ei ole omassa asunnossa. Mutta talossa on yhteinen sauna. Pääsen saunaan kerran viikossa. Se riittää minulle.
Pidän asunnostamme paljon. Naapurit ovat hiljaisia. Talo on lähellä metroa ja kauppaa. Puisto on viiden minuutin päässä. Lapsille on koulu kahden korttelin päässä.
Olen päättänyt asua täällä monta vuotta. Jonain päivänä haluamme ehkä isomman asunnon, jos perhe kasvaa. Mutta sitä ennen meidän pitää säästää rahaa. Helsingin asuntomarkkinoilla pieni asunto on kullanarvoinen.

Apartment-hunting in Helsinki is surprisingly difficult. Apartment prices are high, and good apartments go quickly. I searched for an apartment for six months before finding this one.
I had seen over twenty apartments. Each time I went to a viewing and walked around the rooms. The apartments were often too small, too expensive or too far from the centre. Sometimes the owner chose some other tenant.
Eventually I found an apartment that pleased me. It's in an apartment building with four floors. Our apartment is on the second floor. The building was built in the 1960s, but it has been renovated well.
The apartment has two rooms, a kitchen and a bathroom. The total area is fifty-five square metres. Small but enough for two people. We pay 1,200 euros a month rent, which is the average price in Helsinki.
The living room has a big window. From the window the street is visible and trees behind it. In the morning the sun shines into the living room. This is my favorite spot. I often sit on the sofa, drink coffee and read a book.
The kitchen is small but functional. It has a fridge, stove, microwave and dishwasher. My wife loves the dishwasher. She says it's the best invention. Earlier we washed dishes by hand, which took a lot of time.
The bedroom is peaceful. The window opens to the yard. There's no traffic in the yard, so you can sleep quietly. I'm satisfied with the sleep quality. In the previous apartment I heard the sound of cars all night.
The bathroom has a shower, toilet and washing machine. We don't have a sauna in our own apartment. But the building has a shared sauna. I get to the sauna once a week. That's enough for me.
I like our apartment a lot. The neighbours are quiet. The building is close to the metro and the shop. The park is five minutes away. The children's school is two blocks away.
I have decided to live here for many years. Someday we may want a bigger apartment if the family grows. But before that we need to save money. In the Helsinki housing market a small apartment is worth its weight in gold.
