Christmas in Finland
Joulu on Suomen tärkein juhla. Suomalaiset rakastavat joulua. Joulu on talvella, joulukuun lopussa.
Jouluaaton aamuna käyn ruokakaupassa. Ostan ruokaa ja juomaa. Kotona laitan jouluruokia. Teen kinkkua, perunalaatikkoa ja porkkanalaatikkoa. Vaimoni leipoo pipareita ja piparkakkuja.
Iltapäivällä koristelemme joulukuusen. Kuusi on olohuoneessa. Laitamme kuuseen valoja, palloja ja tähden. Lapset ovat innoissaan.
Kello viisi syömme jouluaterian. Pöydällä on paljon ruokaa. Sytytämme kynttilät. Koko perhe on yhdessä.
Sitten lapset odottavat joulupukkia. Joulupukki tulee ovesta sisään. Hänellä on iso pussi. Pussissa on lahjoja. Jokainen saa lahjan. Lapset ovat onnellisia.
Illalla menemme saunaan. Joulusauna on perinne. Sitten katsomme televisiota. Ulkona sataa lunta. Kynttilät palavat ikkunoissa.
Joulupäivänä lepäämme. Syömme jouluruoan tähteitä. Vierailemme isovanhempien luona. Vietämme aikaa rauhassa.
Joulu on lämpöä ja perhettä. Joulu on hetki, jolloin kiire loppuu. Joulu on rauhan aika.
English translation
Christmas is Finland's most important holiday. Finns love Christmas. Christmas is in winter, at the end of December.
On Christmas Eve morning I go to the grocery store. I buy food and drink. At home I prepare Christmas foods. I make ham, potato casserole and carrot casserole. My wife bakes gingerbread cookies.
In the afternoon we decorate the Christmas tree. The tree is in the living room. We put lights, balls and a star on the tree. The children are excited.
At five we eat the Christmas dinner. There is lots of food on the table. We light candles. The whole family is together.
Then the children wait for Santa. Santa comes in through the door. He has a big sack. In the sack are gifts. Everyone gets a gift. The children are happy.
In the evening we go to the sauna. The Christmas sauna is a tradition. Then we watch television. Outside it's snowing. Candles burn in the windows.
On Christmas Day we rest. We eat leftovers of the Christmas food. We visit the grandparents. We spend time peacefully.
Christmas is warmth and family. Christmas is the moment when the rush ends. Christmas is a time of peace.
